Huawei and China Mobile Qinghai Collaborate to Safeguard China’s Water Tower

Shenzhen, In a significant environmental initiative, Huawei and China Mobile Communications Group Qinghai Co., Ltd. (China Mobile Qinghai) have successfully deployed an all-optical network in Qinghai province to protect the vital “Three-River-Source” region. This collaborative project utilizes advanced Optical Cross-connect (OXC) and OTN technologies, integrating cutting-edge cloud technologies for ecological conservation.

According to Huawei, the “Three-River-Source” area, situated in southern Qinghai Province, China, is a critical ecological zone. Sitting at over 4000 meters above sea level, it serves as the headwater for the Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Lancang River, and is crucial for China and the global environment. This region, often referred to as China’s Water Tower, is the highest natural wetland in China and hosts unique flora and fauna, including rare species like snow leopards and Tibetan antelopes.

The partnership between China Mobile Qinghai and Huawei focused on building "one network" for all-optical transmission and "one cloud" for computing. This approach simplifies the infrastructure to support various applications, such as biodiversity monitoring, vegetation and forest surveillance, anti-poaching efforts, and early fire detection. This marks the establishment of the highest-altitude ecological information monitoring system in China.

Huawei’s all-optical switching OXC has been instrumental in building an all-optical base for China Mobile Qinghai, offering ultra-low latency and facilitating ultra-fast video data transmission across different regions. The network also includes an automatically switched optical network (ASON), enhancing its resilience against multiple fiber cuts and adapting to Qinghai’s complex environment.

In terms of computing power, the construction of a next-generation big data center is underway, featuring zero carbon emission, ultra-fast operations, high efficiency, intelligence, and security. This includes the integration of innovative technologies to reduce carbon emissions in data centers significantly.

China Mobile Qinghai has committed to expanding the construction of green all-optical networks and computing infrastructure. They aim to extend optical transmission throughout the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, providing essential computing power for Northwest China and supporting Qinghai's high-quality economic development.

This initiative is part of Huawei's global TECH4ALL action plan, launched in 2019, which aims to use innovative digital technologies for more balanced and sustainable development in the digital world. The protection of the “Three-River-Source” region is a key example of TECH4ALL’s impact.
