KATI Opposes Gas Tariff Hike, Demands Consideration for Industrial Sector

Karachi, In a decisive stance against the proposed increase in gas tariffs for industrial consumers, the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) has voiced its strong opposition. The association's president, Johar Qandhari, has called on the government and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to rethink the policy, highlighting the detrimental impact it could have on the industrial sector.

According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, during a recent OGRA hearing, KATI representatives, including Rehan Javed, Chairman of KATI's standing committee, presented their case against the tariff rise. They articulated the financial hardships industrialists endure, particularly the unfair expectation for them to subsidize domestic gas consumption amid escalating line losses and theft issues. Qandhari emphasized the critical need for a rational tariff structure, proposing a significant reduction in industrial gas rates to Rs 500 per mmbtu to ensure the sector's viability and competitiveness.

Furthermore, KATI has suggested that the government adopt alternative subsidy mechanisms for low-income households, such as utilizing the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), to offload the burden from industrialists. Qandhari firmly rejected any proposals for gas blending practices that would prioritize domestic consumption over industrial needs, stressing the importance of fair tariffs to preserve industrial growth and employment.

The association's plea underscores the broader concerns within the industrial community about rising operational costs and the potential for adverse effects on Pakistan's economic fabric. As discussions progress, the industry looks to OGRA and governmental authorities for supportive measures that balance the needs of all stakeholders.
