KE Unveils Plan for 640 MW Renewable Energy Projects Amidst Growing Demand

Karachi, K-Electric (KE), the primary electricity supplier in Karachi, has announced an ambitious initiative to incorporate 640 MW of renewable energy into its service area by 2030, aiming for a 30% renewable share in its energy mix. This announcement came during a roadshow that attracted about 100 local and international institutions, highlighting the utility’s proactive approach in transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions.

According to K-Electric, the plan includes significant collaborations with the Governments of Balochistan and Sindh to secure land for solar projects, with capacities of 150 MW and 270 MW, respectively. Additionally, a 220 MW hybrid wind and solar project is set to be developed in Dhabeji, Sindh. This strategic move is part of KE’s broader Power Acquisition Programme (PAP), which also features a $2 billion investment in enhancing its transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Since its privatization, KE has significantly improved its operational efficiencies, cutting transmission and distribution losses from 34% to 15%, and doubling both its customer base and power consumption. With an anticipated 30% increase in customers by 2030, leading to a demand for 5,000 MW, KE is preparing to meet these needs through a mix of indigenous and renewable energy sources.

CEO Moonis Alvi emphasized the importance of this milestone, noting the substantial local and international interest in KE's projects and expressing gratitude towards NEPRA and the regional governments for their support. Chief Strategy Officer Shahab Qader Khan also highlighted the future-focused nature of these initiatives, indicating that the upcoming projects will not only address imminent energy demands but also significantly shape the region's energy future.
