FBR and Traders Set to Address Concerns Over Tajir Dost Tax Scheme

Islamabad: Today, a delegation of traders will engage in talks with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to iron out their grievances regarding the Tajir Dost Tax scheme, which has sparked significant unrest within the business community due to its perceived harsh implementation measures.

According to Zameen.Com, Naeem Mir, the Chief Coordinator for the Tajir Dost scheme, has indicated that previous disputes between the traders and the FBR have been settled, paving the way for constructive dialogue in Islamabad. Mir highlighted the traders' commitment to national cooperation, stating they are open to suggestions that could refine the scheme. This meeting follows a nationwide strike by traders protesting the scheme and high electricity costs.

Launched in March 2024, the Tajir Dost scheme is a voluntary initiative aimed at bringing unregistered businesses into the formal tax fold, a move aligned with International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements. The scheme is expected to generate Rs 400 to 500 billion annually for the national treasury. With a registration deadline set for April 30, 2024, the FBR has reassured businesses that once registered, no further re-registration will be necessary. Despite these assurances and the projected financial benefits, the scheme has met with resistance, making the outcomes of tomorrow’s discussions critical for its future success.
