NEPRA Greenlights K-Electric’s Five-Year Power Acquisition Strategy

Karachi, The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved K-Electric's Power Acquisition Programme (PAP) for the fiscal years 2024 to 2028, a significant step toward enhancing the sustainability and reliability of Karachi's power supply. This strategic plan is part of K-Electric’s ongoing efforts to integrate renewable energy and diversify energy sources to stabilize Karachi's power infrastructure.

According to K-Electric, the approved PAP, initially submitted on March 20, 2023, outlines an ambitious framework to bolster power supply by incorporating a substantial quota of renewable energy alongside local fuel options and additional power off-takes from the National Grid. This aligns with the NEPRA-approved Integrated Generation Capacity Expansion Plan (IGCEP) 2022-2031, the National Electricity Policy 2021, and the National Electricity Plan 2023-2027.

A key element of the PAP is its focus on renewable energy, with plans to integrate 1,282 MW by 2030 through various projects, including a 270 MW solar PV project in Karachi and a 200 MW hybrid plant near Dhabeji Grid Station. These projects are designed to enhance the city’s energy mix, promote environmental sustainability, and reduce the carbon footprint significantly.

Moonis Alvi, CEO of K-Electric, praised NEPRA's approval, stating it provides a clear path forward for the next five years and emphasizes the crucial role of clean energy in creating a sustainable energy ecosystem in Karachi. He noted that the plan not only aims for energy sustainability but also seeks to balance affordability and reliability for the city’s consumers.

The programme also includes adding capacity based on local coal to further diversify the energy mix and reduce dependence on imported fuels. Moreover, it details agreements to increase the import of power from the National Grid, which is expected to enhance grid utilization and benefit both consumers and the sector at large.

This approval by NEPRA marks a pivotal milestone for K-Electric as it continues to address the growing energy demands of Karachi while pushing forward with initiatives that emphasize sustainability and renewable energy integration.
