KARACHI: Rice growers, traders, millers, and exporters have called upon the Government of Sindh to implement a comprehensive program to support the cultivation and expansion of Basmati rice. The initiative is seen as a key opportunity to boost farmers' incomes, strengthen rural economies, and enhance Pakistan's foreign-exchange earnings.

According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, Basmati is not merely a rice variety but a significant part of Pakistan's agricultural identity and heritage. Historically cultivated in Sindh, the region's Basmati rice has gained recognition in international markets. Stakeholders believe that with proper government support and modern practices, Sindh could significantly increase its Basmati production.

The stakeholders highlighted the importance of developing a complete Basmati value chain, from cultivation to international marketing. They urged the Sindh government, particularly the Agriculture Department, to prioritize Basmati cultivation and formulate a sustainable long-term strategy for its expansion.

They also emphasized the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors, involving various stakeholders such as growers, researchers, seed developers, and exporters. The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority has been approached to provide technical and institutional support to enhance the sector's productivity and market access.

The stakeholders are initiating a national dialogue on Basmati's future in Sindh, led by rice expert Hamid Malik. The discussions will explore various aspects of the Basmati value chain and aim to create a roadmap for its development in Sindh. The initiative will include webinars and seminars to engage stakeholders directly and develop practical recommendations.
