Lahore: Chairperson of the Carpet Training Institute, Ijaz-ur-Rehman, has called for swift and thorough measures to support Pakistan's hand-knotted carpet industry and enhance its standing in international markets. The industry faces challenges such as increasing competition from other carpet-producing nations, the need for modern technology, and skilled manpower.

According to Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Ijaz-ur-Rehman highlighted these issues during a briefing with stakeholders, discussing a review of Pakistan's carpet exports. He noted that despite the country's longstanding role in the global carpet market, factors such as fluctuating raw material costs, rising production expenses, and workforce shortages are hindering growth. Additionally, political instability and regulatory challenges are limiting the industry's competitiveness.

Ijaz-ur-Rehman emphasized that Pakistani carpet manufacturers must balance competitive pricing, high quality, and traditional craftsmanship to remain relevant. While the government has introduced incentives like duty drawbacks and tax concessions, further action is necessary to develop skilled labor, encourage technological investment, and enhance global market access.

The chairperson remarked that demand for hand-knotted carpets in regions like the United States, Europe, and the Middle East presents opportunities for Pakistani exporters. However, capitalizing on these opportunities requires strategic planning and coordinated efforts. He asserted that with a comprehensive strategy, Pakistan could improve its global market position for hand-knotted carpets in the future.
