KARACHI: Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah announced during the 21st My Karachi - Oasis of Harmony Exhibition that his government, in partnership with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), is taking measures to assist shopkeepers affected by the Gul Plaza incident. The Chief Minister assured that compensation would be provided within two months, allowing shopkeepers to restart their businesses.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Chief Minister revealed that temporary locations have been identified for shopkeepers to resume operations without incurring rent until the reconstruction of Gul Plaza is completed. The government is providing Rs. 10 million compensation to each family of victims of the incident, with an immediate relief of Rs. 500,000 for each shopkeeper. The Gul Plaza will be reconstructed to its original specifications within two years, ensuring higher safety standards.
The exhibition was attended by Sindh Ministers, KCCI officials, diplomats, and business leaders. The Chief Minister highlighted efforts to enhance Karachi's infrastructure with a Rs. 13 billion investment to improve drainage and roads, and a Rs. 10 billion allocation for industrial zones. He emphasized collaboration with the World Bank on the K-IV water project to supply an additional 260 million gallons per day to the city.
Zubair Motiwala, Chairman of the Businessmen Group, urged the diplomatic community to promote Karachi as a thriving business hub and praised the Sindh Government's initiatives in infrastructure and healthcare. He underscored the importance of fire safety in commercial areas and called for expedited completion of development projects to ease public inconveniences.
Rehan Hanif, President of KCCI, lauded the Sindh Government's support in addressing the Gul Plaza incident and stressed the need for enhanced fire safety measures and infrastructure development. He urged the Chief Minister to prioritize the Safe City Project to ensure security across Karachi.
