Lahore: China will provide digital skills training to 300,000 Pakistani youth each year, a move anticipated to bolster Pakistan's technology sector and knowledge economy, according to Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal. Highlighting Pakistan's position as the fourth-largest freelancing country globally, Iqbal emphasized the role of the nation's youth in expanding the digital economy and increasing exports. He encouraged freelancers and IT professionals to engage with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies to remain competitive internationally.

According to the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal articulated these views during a meeting with LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol at the 3rd LCCI IT Freelancing Awards 2026. Iqbal noted that in today's world, success hinges more on knowledge, skills, and technology access than on large offices or significant investments. He commended Pakistani youth for proving their capabilities and earning valuable foreign exchange by serving international clients.

LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol emphasized collaboration between the government and the private sector to transform Pakistan into a regional digital economy hub. He identified innovation, information technology, and the digital economy as central to the "Uraan Pakistan" vision, which Pakistani freelancers are well-positioned to realize.

Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja Ur Rehman praised the Lahore Chamber's recognition of freelancers' contributions to Pakistan's digital economy, acknowledging their role as digital ambassadors earning millions in foreign exchange. He highlighted the Punjab Government's efforts, in collaboration with the Federal Government and the Special Investment Facilitation Council, to address payment barriers for freelancers and to foster a business-friendly environment.

Under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's leadership, Punjab is investing in digital infrastructure and has launched large-scale AI initiatives, aiming to become a national center for AI and digital entrepreneurship. The Finance Minister stressed the importance of ongoing government-private sector consultations to develop sustainable economic policies, with a vision to produce not only successful freelancers but also AI developers, startup founders, and global technology leaders.
