Islamabad: In a significant enhancement to its tax system, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has amended the Income Tax Rules, 2002, enabling daily updates to the Active Taxpayer’s List (ATL). This change is intended to streamline tax operations and ensure real-time compliance among taxpayers.
According to Zameen.Com, the revisions, disclosed through S.R.O. 1638(I)/2024 on October 18, 2024, transition the ATL from a weekly to a daily update schedule. This adjustment is aimed at providing immediate recognition for compliant taxpayers, thereby increasing the accuracy of the list and enhancing the overall tax compliance process.
The new system allows for taxpayers who meet their filing obligations for the 2024 tax year by the deadline, or within an extended period, to be instantly reflected in the ATL. Those who miss the deadline can still be added after paying a surcharge as prescribed by section 182A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. This modification replaces the prior annual update practice, where the ATL was only refreshed in March, often causing delays in acknowledging taxpayer compliance.
The move to daily updates signifies a substantial improvement in how tax compliance is managed, aiming to foster a more efficient, transparent, and responsive environment for taxpayers. This initiative is expected to benefit all stakeholders by simplifying procedures and ensuring that tax compliance is recognized and rewarded more promptly.
