K-Electric Intensifies Crackdown on Electricity Theft in Karachi

Karachi: K-Electric, in collaboration with law enforcement, has ramped up its efforts to combat electricity theft by removing hundreds of illegal connections in Surjani Town and Korangi Industrial Area. This initiative is part of a broader campaign to secure the power supply and enhance safety across the city.

According to K-Electric, the operation led to the removal of 750 illegal connections, collectively weighing over 650kg, in Surjani Town. The crackdown continued in the Korangi Industrial Area where an additional 50 illegal connections, weighing more than 100kg, were dismantled. These areas were reportedly responsible for the theft of approximately 10,000 units of electricity daily, translating to about 300,000 units each month. The targeted localities included North Karachi 4K Chowrangi to Yousuf Goth, Yaro Goth, Sector 4B and 4C, Mehran Town, Sharafi Goth, Shah Ali Goth, and Haji Shambi Goth.

The ongoing operations aim to reduce electricity loss and mitigate safety hazards posed by unauthorized connections, which bypass the network’s safety protocols. These illegal setups not only endanger K-Electric’s infrastructure but also pose significant risks to community safety, especially during the rainy season.

K-Electric highlighted that the extent of load shedding in various areas is influenced by the localities’ loss profiles, which are exacerbated by electricity theft and non-payment of bills. The company is calling on elected officials, community leaders, and residents to collaborate in tackling these issues to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.
