K-Electric to Boost Karachi’s Power Supply with 640 MW of Renewable Energy

Karachi, K-Electric, the primary electricity supply company in Karachi, has announced plans to integrate 640 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into its system within the next two years, focusing on solar and wind sources. This significant addition aims to alleviate the city's power supply issues and reduce the cost of electricity for its residents.

According to K-Electric, CEO Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi briefed the Council of Energy and Economic Journalists (CEEJ) on the company's renewable energy initiatives. Alvi revealed that the addition of 640 MW of renewable energy, derived from solar and wind sources, is part of K-Electric's strategy to lower production costs and enhance the energy supply in Karachi. The projects will be located in Hub, Othal, Bela, and Sarjani Town, with a substantial investment of 450 million dollars already attracted from 12 companies across Europe, China, and the Middle East.

The company's efforts to modernize its infrastructure include the introduction of smart meters, with a pilot project currently targeting ten thousand users in Karachi. This initiative aims to improve energy distribution and reduce line losses, which have contributed to a reduction in the area exempt from load shedding from 80% to 72%. The smart meters project, which could see costs decrease with larger orders, is part of a broader strategy to enhance the efficiency of electricity usage monitoring in the city.

K-Electric's move towards renewable energy and smart technology reflects a commitment to resolving Karachi's electricity challenges and facilitating a more sustainable and efficient power supply for its inhabitants.
