KARACHI: In a determined move to bolster security and support economic stability, Karachi's Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Azad Khan, has pledged a zero-tolerance stance against extortion and other criminal activities plaguing the city. Addressing a gathering at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), Khan emphasized that the security of Karachi's business sector is a top priority for the Sindh Police, as it is integral to the nation's economic health.
According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Khan highlighted the significant decline in major crimes due to enhanced preventive policing and better coordination with intelligence agencies. The AIGP reported a reduction in terrorism-related incidents and a notable decrease in street crime, underscoring the effectiveness of proactive police operations.
Khan stated that the Karachi Police have intensified their campaign against extortionists, resulting in several arrests and encounters. The reduction in various street crimes, he noted, reflects the police's ongoing efforts to create a safer environment for businesses and citizens alike.
In addition, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah discussed the positive impact of new technology-based traffic reforms, which have led to a decrease in heavy vehicle accident fatalities. The Traffic Police are conducting a comprehensive study on traffic congestion to develop long-term solutions.
Business leaders at the KCCI, including Chairman BMG Zubair Motiwala, urged for fair enforcement of anti-encroachment measures and proposed technological advancements such as an online FIR registration system. They praised the ongoing dialogue between police and the business community as vital for fostering economic growth.
President KCCI Muhammad Rehan Hanif acknowledged improvements in the city's security but called for a more robust strategy against street crime. He emphasized the importance of the Safe City Project in enhancing surveillance and public confidence.
The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts required to address Karachi's security challenges and support its role as Pakistan's economic hub.
