Karachi: In a decisive meeting at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) head office, stakeholders across the Ports and Shipping sector have unanimously supported the establishment of an autonomous Logistics Service Providers Regulatory Authority (LSPRA). This new body aims to standardize and monitor operations within the sector, addressing long-standing issues such as varying charges and improving international compliance.

According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the meeting, chaired by KPT Chairman Syed Syedain Raza Zaidi, resolved to revive and amend the LSPRA Bill, stalled since 2013, to reflect the current needs of the sector. The amended bill, once approved, will be forwarded to the government for enactment. This initiative received backing from various sector representatives, including shipping companies, customs agents, and terminal operators.

Stakeholders highlighted the necessity of a regulatory body to curb unjust practices and facilitate business operations that align with global standards. Concerns were particularly voiced over inconsistent and exorbitant charges levied by Off-dock Terminals, prompting calls for transparent rate listings. The establishment of LSPRA is seen as a critical step toward making Karachi's ports competitive and efficient, fostering a better business environment and supporting the national economy in challenging times.
