KCCI Demands Protection for Genuine Traders Amid Anti-Smuggling Efforts

KARACHI: The Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has made a firm declaration against smuggling, emphasizing its detrimental impact on Pakistan's economy and legitimate businesses. Muhammad Jawed Bilwani, President of KCCI, highlighted the importance of protecting genuine traders whose goods may be wrongfully seized during anti-smuggling operations.

Bilwani reaffirmed KCCI's support for legal measures against smuggling while advocating for the rights of legitimate businessmen whose legally acquired goods are sometimes confiscated. He pointed out that such actions result in significant financial losses and damage to the reputation of honest traders. Bilwani suggested that law enforcement agencies should focus on intercepting smuggled goods at points of origin, such as borders and ports, rather than conducting disruptive raids in Karachi's markets.

The KCCI president stressed the need for strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure that genuine traders are not unfairly targeted. In cases where nighttime raids are unavoidable, he proposed that premises should be sealed until morning, allowing the process to continue in the presence of the business owner or a representative.

Bilwani confirmed the Chamber's commitment to cooperating with the Customs Enforcement Department to combat smuggling. Simultaneously, KCCI remains dedicated to protecting the interests of lawful businesses, promoting a secure environment for legitimate trade.
