KSE-100 Index Drops as Market Reacts to Diverse Economic Signals

Karachi: The KSE-100 index suffered a notable decline, dropping 742 points to close at 77,887 amidst a trading volume of 382 million shares. The movement was influenced by various factors including sector performances and broader economic updates.

According to Turus Securities Limited, top performers in the stock market included NCPL, FATIMA, and BNWM, while HABSM, THALL, and SEARL saw significant declines. Trading activity was heavily concentrated in the technology, textile, and fertilizer sectors, reflecting sector-specific dynamics.

The economic landscape showed mixed signals with the US Federal Reserve's decision to leave interest rates unchanged and a significant reduction in local fuel prices, with petrol and diesel slashed by Rs6.17 and Rs10.86 per litre, respectively. Additionally, the government successfully raised Rs140 billion through a PIBs auction and attracted $120 million in foreign investment for Pakistani T-Bills.

Further economic developments included discussions between the ADB team and BISP officials about a proposed $300 million package, an expected increase in power rates by Rs2.63 per unit, and regulatory changes affecting the LPG and RLNG prices. The FBR also made notable changes by removing the holding period for property capital gains tax, which could impact the real estate sector.

The business sector also showed dynamic changes with Searle announcing the sale of its entire shareholding in its Pakistani subsidiary and Indus Motor Company beginning to export vehicles, marking significant shifts in the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors.
