KSE-100 Index Gains 153 Points Amid Increased Trading Activity

Karachi: The KSE-100 Index recorded an increase of 153 points, closing at 174,930, facilitated by the trading of 626 million shares. Notable price performance was observed in PGLC, PAEL, and ISL, while BNWM, SRVI, and PSEL experienced declines. The trading activity was predominantly concentrated in the refinery, miscellaneous, and technology sectors.

According to Taurus Securities Limited, this positive movement in the market comes amid a backdrop of global and local economic developments. The government has announced a rise in petrol and high-speed diesel prices by Rs2.84 and Rs2.28 per liter, respectively, while the trade gap has expanded by 18 percent to $7.1 billion. Despite these challenges, the State Bank of Pakistan’s reserves have increased by $19 million, with gold prices jumping by Rs11,200.

In a broader economic context, the Asian Development Bank has approved an additional $200 million loan to support the modernization of revenue administration. Meanwhile, Kuwait's GPXP is considering expanding its energy investments in Pakistan, and plans are underway to establish a Fujairah-style oil hub at Hub, featuring a deep-sea terminal.

In the technology sector, IT exports have surged, although the rise of artificial intelligence has led to job cuts. The government is contemplating stricter caps on high-speed diesel refining margins and is receiving positive feedback on proposals to upgrade oil refineries.

The financial landscape is further characterized by the appointment of Imran Sarwar as the CEO of the National Bank of Pakistan for a three-year term. Amid these developments, the government has set a target for petrol deregulation by June 2027, as part of its broader economic strategy.
