LAHORE: The Chairperson of the Carpet Training Institute, Ijaz-ur-Rehman, has called for increased government support for development projects proposed by associations of export-oriented industries. He emphasized the need for such backing to boost exports, reach new international markets, create employment opportunities, and enhance industrial competitiveness.

According to Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Ijaz-ur-Rehman stated that these projects are linked to the interests of the entire industry and the national economy. The limited income of trade and industry associations is generally insufficient to cover the costs of large-scale projects, international exhibitions, research and development, skills training, and global buyer linkages. Government support could therefore be crucial in promoting industrial development and boosting exports.

Ijaz-ur-Rehman further explained that government grants should be seen as a means of implementing economic policy through practical initiatives. This support could facilitate market access, increase exports, modernize technologies, promote research and development, and develop a skilled workforce. Associations manage routine affairs through membership fees and limited income sources, but substantial financial resources are needed for projects with long-term industry benefits.

He suggested that the government assess such schemes based on their potential outcomes, export potential, and overall industry impact. Public-sector support could elevate industrial standards, facilitate certification and training programs, enable participation in international trade fairs, and strengthen international buyer linkages.

Highlighting the upcoming 42nd international exhibition organized by the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association in collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, Ijaz-ur-Rehman described it as an example of effective cooperation between the government and an industry association. The event aims to showcase Pakistan's handmade carpets to international buyers, explore new markets, and generate export opportunities, thereby expanding the country's carpet exports.
