Lahore: The Punjab government has announced a major overhaul of Lahore’s infrastructure, allocating PKR 137 billion to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL). This move transfers the management of 770 development schemes previously handled by the Lahore Restoration PMU, focusing on improving roads, water supply, and sewage systems.

According to Zameen.Com, the decision to dissolve the PMU and shift responsibilities to WASA and MCL comes after a critical evaluation of Lahore’s infrastructure needs. In a briefing to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, WASA and MCL officials presented the pressing issues of the city’s infrastructure, including broken roads and outdated utilities.

The funding allocation sees PKR 59 billion earmarked for MCL and PKR 78 billion for WASA. This financial strategy aims to extend essential services, such as water supply and sewage systems, to underserved areas, addressing long-standing waterlogging issues, especially during the monsoon season.

The shift in project management from the PMU to local agencies like WASA and MCL is intended to streamline operations and enhance accountability. This includes plans for a third-party audit to ensure transparent and efficient use of the allocated funds.
