KARACHI: The S.I.T.E. Association of Industry (SAI) has issued a warning regarding the nationwide goods transport strike, emphasizing its detrimental impact on Pakistan's industrial and trade supply chain. The halt in cargo movement poses a significant threat to the national economy, according to SAI President Ahmed Azeem Alvi.

In a detailed statement, Mr. Alvi highlighted the recurring nature of such strikes and their damaging effects on economic stability. He called on the government to intervene immediately, asserting that no group should disrupt the flow of essential goods.

Mr. Alvi urged the revival and expansion of railway freight services between Karachi and other major cities. He suggested that the introduction of high-speed cargo trains could reduce transportation time and costs, ensuring a steady flow of goods.

"The strike has brought export and import cargo to a standstill," Mr. Alvi stated, expressing concern over missed delivery deadlines and potential order cancellations from international buyers. He also mentioned that containers stranded at ports are accumulating demurrage and detention charges, increasing financial pressure on businesses.

He warned that without the timely delivery of raw materials, industries might face production halts, triggering widespread economic repercussions.

"This is an extremely alarming situation," he added. "The government must act immediately to restore cargo movement and prevent long-term damage to Pakistan's industrial and commercial sectors."
