NEPRA Announces Fuel Charge Relief for Karachi Electric Customers

Karachi: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a relief of PKR 3.64 per kilowatt-hour for Karachi Electric (KE) customers under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for February 2025. This adjustment will be reflected in the May 2025 electricity bills.

NEPRA has temporarily withheld PKR 3 billion related to partial load, open cycle, degradation curves, and start-up costs from the February 2025 FCA. This retention is part of NEPRA's approach to manage adjustments in the Generation Tariff starting from July 2023, ensuring that consumers are not impacted by these costs at a later date.

Fuel charge adjustments are a result of global fuel price fluctuations and changes in the electricity generation mix. These adjustments are subject to NEPRA's review and approval before being applied to customer bills. When global fuel prices decline, the FCA can result in reduced charges for consumers. The final rates included in consumer bills are decided by NEPRA and announced by the Federal Government.

According to NEPRA's ruling, the FCA relief will apply to all consumer categories except lifeline consumers, domestic protected consumers, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, and those who have chosen a prepaid tariff.
