New Digital System Aims to Enhance SME Financing in Pakistan

Karachi: The launch of SMEConnect by the State Bank of Pakistan is being hailed as a significant development in facilitating access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises. Mian Zahid Hussain, President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum and other key business groups, emphasized that the true measure of the system's success would be the volume of loans disbursed, the support for new businesses, and the speed of credit access.

According to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mian Zahid Hussain outlined that from November 1, 2026, all SME financing applications will be processed through SMEConnect, with bank branch staff providing guidance for digital submissions. This system aims to enhance transparency by allowing tracking of applications and identifying rejection reasons, although it requires banks to streamline internal procedures for timely loan decisions and disbursements.

Hussain highlighted the current standing of SME financing at Rs1,148 billion as of late October, with small enterprises comprising nearly 46.9 percent of this figure. He stressed the necessity for adequate financing to boost production, expand businesses, and create jobs, using the pre-launch data as a benchmark for future improvements in the SME sector.

With a current borrower base of approximately 350,862 and a target of 775,000 by mid-2028, the push for increased financing includes reaching new and underserved businesses, particularly women-led enterprises and those in disadvantaged districts. Hussain proposed publishing quarterly reports on bank performance to ensure transparency and accountability in loan processing and disbursement.

He further suggested collaboration among SMEDA, banks, and trade organizations to aid businesses in preparing necessary documentation for loan applications, emphasizing the importance of local language guidance and simpler requirements. Improved credit assessments based on business viability could lead to enhanced production and employment opportunities, positioning SMEConnect as a crucial tool for economic growth.
