ISLAMABAD: A high-level delegation from the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) met with Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan to address significant challenges impacting Pakistan's handmade carpet industry, including regional trade barriers and disruptions in global supply chains. The discussions also focused on measures to enhance the sector's export potential.
According to Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association, the delegation included PCMEA Patron-in-Chief Abdul Latif Malik, Vice Chairman Riaz Ahmad, and Senior Member Usman Ashraf. Director General (Textiles) Mudassar Raza Siddiqui was also present. The group pressed for the immediate release of funds for the 42nd International Handmade Carpet Exhibition scheduled for October, highlighting the need for financial support to attract international buyers and promote exports.
The association urged the government to ban raw wool exports to protect the domestic supply chain and proposed revising the government subsidy ratio for international trade exhibition participation from 50/50 to 80/20. They argued that increased financial assistance would boost small and medium-sized enterprises' participation in global fairs.
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan reiterated the government's commitment to strengthening Pakistan's export sector through transparent and investor-friendly policies. The Ministry of Commerce plans to consult stakeholders to develop practical solutions to the industry's challenges. The minister encouraged the industry to diversify export markets, invest in innovation, and leverage Pakistan's craftsmanship in handmade carpets.
The meeting also explored improving trade connectivity and logistics infrastructure to enhance access to international markets. Jam Kamal Khan emphasized ongoing collaboration with the private sector to eliminate trade barriers and create an environment conducive to export-led growth.
The PCMEA delegation invited the Commerce Minister to inaugurate the 42nd International Handmade Carpet Exhibition, an invitation he accepted.
