KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone by securing a seat on the Policy Commission of the World Customs Organization (WCO) for the 2026-28 term. This accomplishment, hailed as a historic achievement by Zubair Tufail, President of the United Business Group (UBG), marks the first time in nearly seven decades of membership that Pakistan has gained representation on the WCO's highest policy-making forum.

According to United Business Group, this success reflects Pakistan's growing global stature and effective customs diplomacy, underscoring the country's institutional capabilities. The achievement is not only a source of pride for Pakistan Customs but also for the entire business community and the national economy. Despite stiff competition at the Asia-Pacific Regional Heads of Customs Administrations meeting in Hong Kong, Pakistan stood out among six candidate countries competing for five seats, highlighting the international community's recognition of Pakistan's trade reforms and customs system transparency.

The WCO Policy Commission is a crucial platform for policy-making related to global trade, customs modernization, and international governance. Pakistan's presence on this forum is expected to enhance its ability to safeguard national interests and bolster its influence in global trade policy-making. Zubair Tufail noted that Pakistan's recent efforts in customs diplomacy and regional engagement have significantly strengthened its credibility on international forums.

Looking ahead, Tufail expressed optimism that, following the formal approval of this nomination during the WCO Council meeting in June 2026, Pakistan will assume a more active and leading role in shaping global trade and customs policies.
