PCJCCI Advocates for ‘Energy Democracy’ to Tackle Pakistan’s Energy Crisis

Islamabad, The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has introduced the concept of "Energy Democracy" as a novel solution to Pakistan's pressing energy crisis. During a think tank session at the PCJCCI Secretariat, PCJCCI President Moazzam Ghurki proposed the creation of a Private-Public Partnership's Consortium to implement this strategy effectively.

According to Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Senior Vice President Fang Yulong expressed optimism that energy democracy could lead to enhanced efficiency, investment, and reduced tariffs in Pakistan's energy sector. By encouraging participatory decision-making processes, the initiative aims to involve the public directly in energy projects, thus ensuring public ownership in the distribution of energy.

Comparing China's vast installed electricity generation capacity of 1,260 million GW to Pakistan's 22,143 MW of which only 11,000 MW is produced due to various inefficiencies the PCJCCI highlighted the need for substantial improvements in Pakistan's energy infrastructure. Vice President Hamza Khalid criticized the country's inadequate development of large dams, noting Pakistan's construction of only two large dams despite possessing 7% of the world's irrigated area.

Executive Committee Member Col. Ashraf emphasized the urgency of addressing energy shortages to achieve 7 to 8 percent GDP growth. He suggested that Pakistan follow the lead of developed nations by establishing public-owned energy suppliers at local, regional, and cooperative levels.

Secretary-General Salahuddin Hanif elaborated on the benefits of energy democracy, stating that not-for-profit energy companies could offer transparent operations, attract investments, and provide fair energy tariffs. Moreover, such an approach would support the financially disadvantaged by reinvesting profits into local communities, thereby promoting social and economic development.

The PCJCCI's advocacy for energy democracy represents a strategic effort to alleviate Pakistan's energy crisis through collaborative and inclusive means, promising a more sustainable and equitable energy future for the nation.
