PCJCCI keen to boast Furniture market and export

Lahore, March 24, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan’s share in the international wooden furniture market is insignificant, despite the fact that the country has a history of craftsmanship and innovation in the field of wooden furniture. The government should immediately introduce and implement a reforestation plan that is focused on replanting and sustenance of the ever depleting rosewood stated by Mr. Wang Zihai, President Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) during a think tank session held at PCJCCI premises today. The meeting was attended by Mr. Wang Zihai, President PCJCCI, Mr. Ehsan Choudhry, Senior Vice President PCJCCI, Mr. Sarfaraz Butt, Vice President PCJCCI, Mr. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI.

Mr. Wang Zihai, President PCJCCI said that a minimum of ten trees should be planted for every tree cut, and a heavy penalty should be placed on cutting these trees prior to their maturity period. We are keen to introduce modern agricultural enterprises in Pakistan to provide maximum production of seeds and nursery-grown plants of trees, vegetables and flowers of various species. He further added that Tetraploid Paulownia tomentosa is high-quality tree species introduced by Wuhan Weierfu Biological Technology Co., Ltd. It features fast growth rate, high merchantable volume, short maturity period, high timber outturn volume, and huge economic benefits. It will grow rapidly at an accelerated rate one month after it is planted in comparison with ordinary trees.

Mr. Ehsan Choudhry, Senior Vice President PCJCCI said that Tetraploid Paulownia tomentosa features faster growth rate, higher biomass and larger merchantable volume. We should import these trees from China to Pakistan to generate wood, timber to escalate the furniture industry. It takes a short period of time to create an artificial forest of tetraploid Paulownia tomentosa and the restraint of the growth of young plants for root development is not necessary. He further added that it’s an eco-friendly plant with excellent performance in air and water purification and soil remediation.

Mr. Sarfaraz Butt, Vice President PCJCCI said that the high cost of the furniture business has threatened the sector as a whole. The prices of all raw materials used in making furniture which include chipboard, timber, foam, polish chemical materials, colour paints and hard ware have increased. Timber production on the other hand has gone down drastically because of unchecked deforestation the furniture industry must be transformed from cottage or small scale industry to innovative industry through training, upgrading supplies and imports, and above all by preserving and planting more trees.

Mr. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI said that, in view of the afforestation campaign of the Government of Pakistan and the growth of Tetraploid Paulownia tomentosa planted in Pakistan on a trial basis, we recommend that high-quality plants of this tree, which features cold endurance, drought tolerance, saline-alkaline resistance, pollution tolerance fast growth speed, high merchantable volume, short maturity period, high timber outturn volume and huge economic benefits, are planted on a large scale in Pakistan to improve the environment and soil and to generate high economic returns.
