Karachi: In response to the extensive road damage caused by recent heavy rainfall, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved PKR 1.5 billion for infrastructure repairs in Karachi. This funding is intended to address the severe deterioration observed across the city’s thoroughfares following nearly 226 millimeters of rain since August 27.

According to Zameen.Com, the decision was made during a high-level meeting at CM House, where the Chief Minister, along with Planning and Development Minister Nasir Shah, Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani, and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, assessed the damages. The discussions highlighted the extensive impact of the rain on the city’s infrastructure, with 17,861,500 square feet of road surface reported damaged, particularly in District West.

Chief Minister Shah emphasized the necessity of accountability in public infrastructure projects, criticizing the substandard quality of recent roadworks. He directed Minister Ghani to conduct a thorough investigation into the roads constructed or repaired since 2022 and vowed strict action against those found responsible for compromising construction quality.

The approved funds are earmarked for immediate repairs and reconstruction efforts, with an emphasis on adhering to high-quality standards to prevent future failures. Additionally, similar measures were discussed for addressing infrastructural damage in Hyderabad and Sukkur divisions, underscoring a broader provincial response to the monsoon impacts.
