Power Generation in Pakistan Surges to an Eight-Month High in May 2024

Islamabad, Pakistan Power generation in Pakistan has reached an eight-month high, with a total generation of 12,617 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in May 2024. This represents a 46% increase from the previous month and a 3% increase year-over-year. The significant contributors to this surge include hydropower, re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), nuclear energy, and coal, comprising 31%, 22%, 19%, and 14% of the energy mix, respectively.

According to JS Global, The power sector experienced a noticeable shift in its generation sources, particularly with hydropower's increased share from 24% in April 2024. This transition to more hydropower usage contributed to a reduction in the average cost of power generation, which stood at Rs9.1 per kilowatt-hour (KWh) in May, marking an 8% decrease compared to the same month last year. Despite the year-over-year cost reduction, the average cost of generation rose by 2% from April to May 2024, attributed to higher costs associated with LNG.
