Islamabad: Power generation in Pakistan saw a year-on-year increase of 5% in August 2026, reaching 14,942 gigawatt-hours (GWh), according to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). However, this figure represents a slight month-on-month decrease of 1%, attributed to declines in both hydel and re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) based generation from July levels.

According to JS Global, the average cost of power generation for August 2026 was recorded at Rs8.83 per unit, marking an 8% decrease from the previous month but an 18% rise compared to the same period last year. This cost reduction was influenced by a 20% month-on-month drop in the more expensive RLNG-based generation, which reduced its cost contribution to Rs3.6 per unit from Rs4.6 per unit in July 2026.

The energy mix for August 2026 showed significant changes, with coal-based generation experiencing a 53% year-on-year increase, now accounting for 26% of the total energy share. Despite this shift, hydel power remained the leading source, contributing 38% to the overall energy mix with a generation of 5,654 GWh, reflecting a 2% increase year-on-year.
