PTCL and Huawei Launch Pakistan’s First Symmetric 50G-PON Trial

Islamabad, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), In collaboration with Huawei, has successfully conducted Pakistan's first trial of Symmetric 50G-PON technology, marking a significant advancement in the country’s broadband infrastructure.

According to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, Thsis new technology is capable of delivering 50 Gbps of bandwidth for both downstream and upstream transmissions, a notable improvement over the asymmetric version introduced earlier this year which supports high speeds in downstream transmission only. The trial represents a crucial step toward next-generation fiber-optic broadband services in Pakistan.

Symmetric 50G-PON is set to enhance a wide range of applications and services including holographic technologies, XR-based metaverses, smart manufacturing, remote medical services, and high-performance gaming. It also promises to bolster business and enterprise solutions such as smart campuses, video production studios, edge data centers, and cloud-centric SMEs.

One key feature of the 50G-PON technology is its compatibility with existing GPON and XG(S)-PON networks, allowing it to operate over the same infrastructure. This capability enables PTCL to offer improved broadband speeds to customers without the need for extensive network overhauls.

Jafar Khalid, Group Chief Technology and Information Officer at PTCL and Ufone 4G, highlighted the significance of this technological milestone, stating that it demonstrates PTCL’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and shaping the digital future of Pakistan.

The successful implementation of Symmetric 50G-PON is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demands for bandwidth-intensive and low-latency services across various sectors in Pakistan.
