Lahore: In a significant move to boost the agriculture sector, the Punjab government has introduced the Chief Minister’s Green Tractor Scheme, allocating PKR 30 billion to support small-scale farmers with subsidized tractors.
According to Zameen.Com, Provincial Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani announced the initiative during a meeting with tractor industry representatives at Agriculture House. This initiative marks a notable first in providing such substantial subsidies to the farming community, offering tractors ranging from 50 to 85 horsepower for those owning 1 to 50 acres of land, with a significant subsidy on each unit.
The scheme is part of a broader vision to strengthen local agriculture and promote the domestic tractor manufacturing sector. Kirmani urged local manufacturers to offer an additional 10 to 15 percent discount on tractors, further reducing costs for farmers.
The application and tractor delivery process will be fully mechanized and transparent, ensuring farmers can choose their preferred models and adhere to standardized procedures set by the Agriculture Department. Punjab’s Secretary of Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo and Millat Tractors CEO Raheel Asghar also voiced their support, emphasizing the dual benefits of aiding farmers and bolstering the local tractor industry. Asghar confirmed that tractor prices would remain stable, even if federal taxes increase, and announced an extension of the warranty period for added reliability.
