Quetta Plans Reclamation of Rain Nullahs to Combat Urban Flooding

Quetta, A plan has been finalized by the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC) and the irrigation department to address urban flooding by restoring rain nullahs and removing encroachments. This initiative aims to prevent the increasing urban flooding experienced in Quetta following heavy rainfall events.

According to Zameen.Com, the collaborative effort involves dismantling unauthorized structures along rain nullahs, as directed by Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti. QMC Administrator Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat announced the campaign's commencement on Sunday, detailing that 82 sites with encroached rain nullahs have been identified. These blockages disrupt the natural flow of rainwater, contributing significantly to urban flooding.

Shafqaat emphasized the urgent need to clean waste sites and clear obstructed drains to improve the city's cleanliness and hygiene. He also appealed to citizens to maintain environmental cleanliness and avoid further encroachments on nullahs. Issues such as foul odors from sewerage lines and blockages caused by the improper disposal of plastic bags and other solid waste were noted as aggravating the problem, hindering water flow during rains.
