Lahore: The Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) has praised the China-supported Sahiwal Coal-Fired Power Plant as a key success under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), highlighting its role in enhancing Pakistan's energy security and economic development. PCJCCI underscored the need for more such large-scale energy initiatives to address the country's increasing electricity demand and support sustained economic growth.
According to Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nazir Hussain, President of PCJCCI, emphasized that the 1,320-megawatt plant, developed by Huaneng Shandong Ruyi, has supplied consistent electricity to the national grid since 2017, reducing energy shortages and boosting industrial productivity. Hussain called for continued investment in modern energy infrastructure, citing reliable and affordable energy as essential for manufacturing, exports, and sustainable development.
Amir Ali, Vice President of PCJCCI, noted that the Sahiwal project has contributed significantly to the national economy through taxes, local business opportunities, and by generating employment. The project has also provided technical training, equipping Pakistani engineers with modern skills needed for the growing energy and industrial sectors.
Adeel Munawar, Commercial Ambassador of PCJCCI, highlighted the plant's use of advanced supercritical coal-fired technology, which enhances fuel efficiency and reduces coal consumption. The facility employs environmental protection systems to comply with international standards, demonstrating that industrial advancement and environmental responsibility can progress simultaneously.
Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General of PCJCCI, stressed the importance of a diversified and reliable energy mix for Pakistan's expanding economy. While acknowledging the growing role of renewable energy, he affirmed that projects like the Sahiwal Coal-Fired Power Plant are crucial for maintaining grid stability. Hanif concluded that the success of the Sahiwal project should inspire future collaboration between Pakistan and China, advocating for more strategic energy projects to bolster economic prosperity and energy security.
