Munich: In a significant move for regional air mobility, Saudia Group, represented by its subsidiary Saudia Private, has entered into a binding agreement with Lilium N.V. for the acquisition of 50 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) jets, with an option for 50 additional aircraft. This deal, celebrated at Lilium’s headquarters in Munich, stands as the largest of its kind in the MENA region and signifies a major commitment to electric aviation.
According to Saudia Airlines, the ceremony saw the participation of high-profile figures including Saudia Group's CEO Fahd Al-Jarbou, Lilium's CEO Klaus Roewe, and other dignitaries. This agreement not only reflects Saudia Group's alignment with Saudi Vision 2030 but also showcases its leadership in adopting green technologies in aviation. The contract outlines a schedule for deposit and pre-delivery payments, detailed timelines for future deliveries, and comprehensive maintenance and support provisions.
H.E. Engr. Ibrahim Al-Omar, Director General of Saudia Group, expressed pride in leading the region towards sustainable aviation, emphasizing the transformative potential of eVTOL technology in enhancing transportation within Saudi Arabia. "These jets will revolutionize our transport capabilities, offering swift and efficient travel options for business and leisure, significantly reducing travel times within the region," he commented during the event.
The eVTOL jets are expected to reshape the landscape of travel in Saudi Arabia, providing rapid connections between major cities and important pilgrimage sites, thereby supporting the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. This technology promises to reduce regional travel times by up to 90%, facilitating access to remote tourist destinations and improving logistics for business events and sports tournaments.
Looking ahead, Saudia Group plans to commence operations with the first batch of jets in 2026, managed by Saudia Private. The jets will feature premium cabins accommodating up to six passengers, enhancing the travel experience while adhering to Saudia's high service standards. Additionally, Saudia Group will assist Lilium with the certification process through the General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia, ensuring compliance and safety in operations.
Klaus Roewe highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, noting that the Middle East, and specifically Saudi Arabia, represents a vital market for Lilium’s innovative eVTOL solutions. This agreement further positions Lilium as a leader in the eVTOL industry, expanding its global footprint and advancing its mission to offer sustainable and efficient regional air mobility solutions.
