Significant Hydrocarbon Discovery in Tal Block Boosts Pakistan’s Energy Prospects

Kohat: A new discovery of gas condensate at the Razgir-1 exploratory well within the Tal Block in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has marked a significant milestone in Pakistan's energy sector. The discovery, made in the Kawagarh-1 formation, could lead to increased domestic hydrocarbon supplies and bolster the country's reserves, addressing both energy needs and economic stability.

According to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, the exploratory well was spudded on January 9, 2024, and reached a total vertical depth of 3,773.98 meters. Testing of the Kawagarh-1 formation yielded promising results, producing approximately 16.4 million standard cubic feet per day of gas and 159 barrels per day of condensate. This discovery by the TAL Joint Venture, which includes major stakeholders such as OGDCL, MOL Pakistan, Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Pakistan Oilfields Limited, and Government Holdings Private Limited, is expected to enhance further exploration and development activities in the region.

The success at Razgir-1 has not only de-risked additional exploratory targets within the Tal Block but also opened new avenues for potential hydrocarbon plays. This development is aligned with national efforts to increase indigenous energy production and reduce reliance on imports.
