Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has called on the Sindh Ministry of Agriculture to encourage small and medium enterprise (SME) farmers to increase their income by cultivating Basmati and other high-value rice varieties. The organization highlighted the potential benefits of diversifying rice production in Sindh, which could enhance Pakistan's rice export earnings.

According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, Zulfikar Thaver, president of UNISAME, emphasized the importance of identifying suitable areas in Sindh for the cultivation of Basmati and other aromatic rice varieties. He noted that while traditional coarse varieties like IRRI will continue to be grown in certain areas, there exists a significant opportunity to explore and develop regions where premium rice can be produced.

Thaver pointed out that Sindh's history of producing aromatic rice, such as the Sughdashi variety, demonstrates the province’s capacity for high-value rice cultivation. He proposed that a strategic plan be implemented to support farmers through measures such as area identification, research trials, and training programs to ensure the successful adoption of these crops.

The initiative aims to boost the income of SME farmers, enhance the rice value chain, and increase Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings. However, UNISAME stressed that institutional support is crucial for farmers to transition to new cultivation practices. The proposed program includes mapping suitable areas, providing quality seeds, and strengthening agricultural extension services.

UNISAME also recommended coordination with rice exporters, millers, and researchers to ensure commercial viability and market linkages. The organization believes that with the right support and guidance, SME farmers in Sindh can capitalize on the opportunities available to them, ultimately benefiting both the local and national economy.
