Sindh Food Authority to Open New Food Testing Lab in Karachi’s District East

Karachi: The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) plans to establish its second food testing laboratory in Karachi’s District East, targeting improvements in food safety and licensing processes. The new facility, set to be located near Peoples Roundabout, aims to offer reduced testing charges to alleviate the financial burden on local businesses. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance food quality control across the region.

According to Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Director General Muzammil Halipoto announced the development during a recent meeting at the chamber. Halipoto, who has been active in expanding SFA’s reach within Sindh, emphasized the authority's commitment to strict enforcement against food adulteration and unhygienic conditions. The meeting also addressed concerns regarding the economic impact of SFA's penalties on businesses, suggesting a need for more balanced enforcement measures.

The new lab is part of an overarching strategy to revamp the SFA’s operations, which includes simplifying licensing procedures and ensuring the presence of the authority in all 30 districts of Sindh. Halipoto highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce lab test charges as a move to support businesses financially. The discussion at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry also touched on the need for confidentiality and judiciousness in the publicizing of inspection outcomes to protect business reputations.
