KARACHI: At a flag-hoisting ceremony marking Pakistan's 79th Independence Day, Sindh Minister for Labour and Human Resources Saeed Ghani emphasized the necessity of expanding and doubling the nation's tax base as a means to address economic challenges.
According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, the event, held at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), featured prominent figures including KATI President Muhammad Ikram Rajput and Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya. Ghani highlighted the need for collective efforts and sound policies to drive economic and trade development in Pakistan, asserting that the country's economic issues are not insurmountable. He noted that the current contribution of Rs260 billion to the federation could significantly increase if tax compliance improves, thus propelling the nation forward.
Ghani also remarked on the shift in national sentiment following the recent "Battle of Truth," contrasting the previous fear-filled celebrations of Independence Day with the newfound enthusiasm and national spirit. He credited Pakistan's progress on the international stage to the diplomatic efforts of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, which he argued have bolstered Pakistan's position while diminishing India's.
KATI President Muhammad Ikram Rajput addressed the gathering, suggesting that Pakistan is moving towards forming a new Muslim superpower bloc with nations like Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Rajput expressed hope that Iran would join this emerging alliance, signaling a step towards the vision of a unified Islamic bloc envisioned by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1979. He also emphasized the importance of national unity and an industry-friendly environment to foster economic stability and growth.
Deputy Patron-in-Chief Zubair Chhaya highlighted the resilience of Pakistan in the face of adversity and the significance of recent international agreements. He called for improved respect and recognition for taxpayers, urging Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to advocate for industrialists in Parliament. Chhaya noted that despite challenges, Karachi has the potential to help overcome the country's economic obstacles.
The ceremony concluded with Minister Ghani cutting an Independence Day cake, as attendees conveyed their hopes for Pakistan's continued security and prosperity.
