KARACHI: The Sindh Core Committee of the United Business Group (UBG), currently leading the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), has unanimously nominated SM Tanveer as its presidential candidate for the upcoming FPCCI elections. This decision was made during a significant meeting chaired by Core Committee Chairman Khalid Tawab, where all members, except Ahmed Chinoy, endorsed Tanveer's candidature.
According to United Business Group sources, Ahmed Chinoy, a fellow UBG member, voiced his discontent over the nomination. Chinoy, who was also a presidential hopeful, criticised the nomination process and questioned the late SM Muneer's association with Karachi. These remarks were met with strong resentment from the Sindh Core Committee, which asserted the Muneer family's longstanding ties to the city.
The Core Committee urged SM Tanveer to advance the interests of the FPCCI and to enhance the institution's stature by contesting the presidential election. Tanveer, highlighting his deep-rooted connection to Karachi, stated that his family's legacy and his own life were entrenched in the city, reinforcing his commitment to the role.
Expressing gratitude, Tanveer acknowledged the support from the business community across various provinces and emphasized the importance of unity within UBG. He also extended thanks to Hanif Gohar for the establishment of the SM Muneer Auditorium, a gesture commemorating his family's contribution.
In a related development, the UBG Patron-in-Chief announced plans to establish an SM Muneer-UBG House in Karachi. This facility aims to serve as a pivotal hub for the group's activities, fostering greater coordination and engagement among the business community.
