KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan has introduced SMEConnect, a centralized digital platform aimed at simplifying the process for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to access financing, which is considered a key driver of Pakistan's economic growth.
According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, the central bank's initiative is a response to previous setbacks in stimulating the SME sector. Historically, banks and development finance institutions (DFIs) have been reluctant to extend credit to SMEs, preferring safer investments in government securities. The new platform, set to become the sole channel for financing applications starting November 1, will feature real-time application tracking, reasons for rejection, and a live dashboard accessible to regulators.
Despite the higher default rates associated with SMEs, the government is promoting SME financing as a means to invigorate business and industrial activities, given the country's economic expansion remains at 3.7 percent. In addition to SMEConnect, the government provides alternative investment avenues through the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme, which offers higher investment levels than SMEs.
The State Bank of Pakistan emphasized that SMEConnect will enhance the loan application process, making it more accessible, efficient, and transparent. The live dashboard will offer the central bank complete visibility into the status of financing applications across the banking sector, with real-time data available on applications at various stages.
Banks have been advised to prominently display the SMEConnect link on their websites to facilitate client access. Additionally, bank staff are being trained to assist applicants in navigating the new platform. A tutorial video is available on the portal for further guidance.
This initiative highlights the State Bank of Pakistan's commitment to supporting financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and strengthening the SME financing ecosystem to foster inclusive economic growth.
