Islamabad: To commemorate Pakistan's Independence Day, Bank Alfalah has partnered with WWF-Pakistan to execute a mangrove plantation initiative under its Alfa Forest program. The event underscores the bank's dedication to environmental sustainability and aligns with Pakistan's goals to restore and protect its coastal ecosystems.
According to Bank Alfalah, the plantation activity was held at the WWF-Pakistan Wetland Centre in Karachi and included participation from Bank Alfalah employees, WWF-Pakistan representatives, environmental specialists, and volunteers. This event is part of the bank's ongoing efforts in environmental conservation, facilitated through the Alfa Forest initiative, which allows customers to engage in tree planting via digital banking transactions.
The mangrove plantation drive represents an extension of Alfa Forest by converting customer participation into tangible environmental action, in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan. This effort demonstrates Bank Alfalah's ongoing commitment to responsible banking through support for nature-based solutions that address climate change, safeguard biodiversity, and enhance the resilience of coastal communities.
Out of 1.4 million active users of the Alfa App, more than 1 million have participated in this initiative, leading to the planting of a mangrove tree on their behalf. Muhammad Yahya Khan, Chief Digital Officer of Bank Alfalah, emphasized the role of technology in fostering positive change, enabling customers to contribute to sustainable conservation through digital banking. The partnership with WWF-Pakistan facilitates translating customer participation into substantial action on the ground, aiding the restoration of Pakistan's coastal ecosystems and promoting a sustainable future.
Rab Nawaz, Senior Director of Programmes at WWF-Pakistan, highlighted the importance of mangrove forests in protecting coastal ecosystems, capturing carbon, preserving biodiversity, and supporting local livelihoods. He expressed appreciation for Bank Alfalah's commitment to environmental conservation and their collaboration on an initiative that encourages public involvement while delivering enduring environmental benefits.
Pakistan's mangrove forests are crucial to the country's natural ecosystems, providing defense against coastal erosion, supporting marine biodiversity, and acting as carbon sinks.
