Complaint Cell Established at Karachi Chamber to Tackle Encroachments and Traffic Issues

KARACHI: In response to growing concerns about encroachments, deteriorating infrastructure, and severe traffic congestion, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has announced the creation of a "Complaint Cell" at the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). This initiative involves representatives from the Commissioner's Office, relevant Deputy Commissioners' Offices, and KCCI.

According to a statement by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the complaint cell is intended to address issues faced by the business community, particularly shopkeepers affected by encroachments. Commissioner Naqvi emphasized that strict actions, including penalties and sealing of premises, will be taken against encroachments. Shopkeepers allowing such activities will also face consequences.

The announcement was made during a meeting attended by President KCCI Muhammad Jawed Bilwani and other officials. Concerns over rising commodity prices were also addressed, with assurances of ongoing efforts to regulate prices.

Commissioner Naqvi acknowledged ongoing traffic issues, noting that congestion will persist until the completion of development projects like the Bus Rapid Transit initiative. The possibility of allowing heavy vehicles during off-peak hours is being considered to alleviate business challenges.

Additionally, Naqvi highlighted the misuse of parking spaces in buildings and the dysfunction of traffic signals as contributors to traffic chaos. He urged compliance with parking regulations and emphasized the need for restructuring the Traffic Engineering Bureau.

The meeting also saw discussions on improving road safety and enforcing traffic laws. President Bilwani proposed an e-challan system to enhance law enforcement and transparency. He highlighted the illegal use of designated parking spaces and called for immediate intervention to restore them.

Bilwani also raised concerns about the misuse of Jinnah flyover by heavy vehicles, urging restoration of damaged height barriers to prevent accidents. He assured KCCI's commitment to collaborating with the Commissioner's Office to address Karachi's challenges and improve urban conditions.
