FBR Reveals Misuse of Deceased Individuals’ SIM Cards for Tax Filings

Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has raised concerns about the continued operation of mobile SIM cards registered to deceased persons, which are being used to file tax returns. This misuse was highlighted amid ongoing efforts to ensure compliance and accurate taxpayer records.

According to Zameen.Com, FBR Chairman Rashid Langrial stressed the importance of deactivating SIM cards of the deceased promptly, a process hindered by the failure to submit death certificates. This oversight has resulted in situations where family members continue to use these SIM cards to submit tax returns, sometimes out of sentimental reasons, keeping their loved ones’ mobile numbers active.

The issue extends beyond tax fraud, as Langrial also briefed a committee on the complications surrounding alcohol exports from Pakistan, citing regulatory challenges. A report has been solicited from the Director General of Excise Punjab to address industry grievances concerning export permissions. Additionally, an ordinance is being drafted to tighten enforcement in related sectors.

Furthermore, the FBR is advancing its regulatory framework, with the implementation of a track and trace system for the sugar industry set to be operational by mid-November, enhancing transparency and accountability within this vital sector.
