Google’s Office Opening in Pakistan Signals Boost to National Digital Economy

KARACHI: President of the United Business Group (UBG), Zubair Tufail, announced that the opening of Google's office in Pakistan marks a significant milestone for the country's digital economy. Tufail noted that this move reflects a growing confidence among global investors and technology firms in Pakistan's potential, spurred by government initiatives promoting digitalization, artificial intelligence, and modern technologies, which are expected to positively influence business activities, investment, and employment prospects.

According to UBG Central Spokesperson Gulzar Feroz, Tufail emphasized that Google's establishment of a permanent office in Pakistan underscores recognition of the country's vast young population, IT capabilities, and expanding digital market. He highlighted that Pakistani youth are already proving their mettle in global markets through freelancing, software development, e-commerce, and digital services. Google's commitment to providing Pakistani students with free access to its Gemini platform for one year is anticipated to further expose the younger generation to advanced AI technologies.

Tufail called for leveraging the launch of 5G technology, the new spectrum policy, and investments in telecommunications infrastructure as part of an integrated digital economic strategy. He urged the government to collaborate with telecom operators, global tech firms, and the private sector to foster an environment that attracts both local and foreign investment into digital businesses, IT exports, startups, and AI projects.

The UBG President stressed that Pakistan should transition from viewing the digital economy solely in terms of internet and mobile services to harnessing it as a significant driver of exports, industrial productivity, employment, and economic growth. With consistent policies, an improved business environment, and equipping youth with modern digital skills, Pakistan has the potential to emerge as a major regional hub for technology and digital services. Google's decision to establish an office in Pakistan is seen as the beginning of this transformative journey, enhancing global confidence in the country.
