IUCN and Huawei Announce Sierra Nevada’s Green List Renewal and Tech4Nature Project Expansion.

Spain: The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in collaboration with Huawei Spain, the Center for Mediterranean Cooperation (IUCN Med), and the Sierra Nevada Natural Area, have announced the renewal of the Sierra Nevada National Park’s status as an IUCN Green List site. This announcement was made during the II International Mountain Congress (CIMAS II) held at the Palacio de Congresos in Granada, marking the 25th anniversary of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The Park’s recognition was officially awarded at COP16 on Biodiversity in Cali, Colombia, acknowledging its excellence in protected area management.

According to Huawei, the Tech4Nature global partnership, initiated in 2020, aims to enhance nature conservation through technological innovation. During CIMAS II, IUCN organized sessions highlighting biodiversity protection and sustainability, emphasizing the importance of technology in achieving conservation goals. As part of the Tech4Nature Phase I project, the partnership assessed the balance between recreation and nature conservation across four protected areas in Spain, deploying technological solutions such as cameras, GPS receivers, and AI to monitor and minimize the environmental impact of visitors.

The expansion into Phase II of Tech4Nature will focus on improving conservation and visitor management using digital solutions, enhancing data analysis in protected areas, and exploring outdoor navigation applications for better visitor-wildlife interaction. The Sierra Nevada National Park, as the only Spanish site with the IUCN Green List distinction, serves as a model for effective conservation, leveraging scientific knowledge to preserve unique ecosystems.

At a roundtable session, stakeholders from various organizations discussed integrating conservation, recreation, and technology for sustainable mountain ecosystem management. Topics included studies on capacity in protected areas, sustainable management of mountain sports events, and employing digital technologies to reduce recreational activities’ environmental impact.

The Tech4Nature initiative aligns with Huawei’s TECH4ALL program and the IUCN Green List objectives, supporting conservation challenges with tailored solutions in multiple countries, including Spain. IUCN Green List Programme Manager Thierry Lefebvre emphasized the significance of Sierra Nevada’s Green List status as a benchmark for effective conservation practices worldwide.

The ongoing collaboration between IUCN and Huawei through the Tech4Nature project is set to reinforce Sierra Nevada’s position in protected area management, fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange across Mediterranean countries while supporting international conservation commitments like the 30×30 objective.
