Karachi, July 19, 2021 (PPI-OT): Power generation rises 7% YoY during FY21

As per latest data released by NEPRA, power generation during Jun-2021 rose 8% YoY to 14,361GWh. Interestingly, Furnace Oil (FO) and Coal were the only major sources that saw an uptick in generation on a YoY basis during the month. With the inclusion of Jun-2021, total power generation for the outgoing fiscal year amounts to 130,133GWh, reflecting a 7% increase over FY20.

Given the shortage of Natural Gas and the supply disruptions in RLNG during the year, FO based generation saw an expectedly massive increase (50% YoY). Yet, its relatively low contribution of 5% in FY21 is a clear indication of the low base effect. On the other hand, RLNG based power generation saw the highest absolute increase of 3,105GWh (+13% YoY) during the year. This was followed by Coal based power which accounted for an additional 1,995GWh towards the total this year.

During 2QCY21, power generation grew by 12% YoY to 37,852GWh. Here too FO was seen leading the growth with a phenomenal +159% YoY increase. This was followed Coal and Gas which were used to produce 7,649GWh (+24% YoY) and 4,036GWh (+21% YoY) respectively during the quarter. Hydel generation however dipped by 13% YoY to 10,260 during 2QCY21.
