Karachi: K-Electric (KE) has intensified its efforts against power theft and non-payment of electricity bills, as an operation conducted in Malir resulted in the removal of over 150 illegal connections, known locally as "kunda." These connections, weighing a total of 1,280 kilograms, were discovered to be stealing approximately 110,000 units of electricity each month. The operation, supported by law enforcement agencies, also led to the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against individuals involved in the illegal network.
According to K-Electric, these illegal connections circumvent the network's safety measures, posing significant risks to both the utility's infrastructure and public safety. The ongoing drives aim to mitigate electricity losses due to theft and enhance community safety by eliminating these hazards.
Currently, 70% of K-Electric's network is free from loadshedding, as the company continues efforts to reduce losses in areas with high theft rates. Power theft and bill non-payment significantly impact loadshedding durations in different areas. Regions identified as having low losses enjoy exemption from loadshedding, provided residents maintain timely bill payments and combat power theft.
K-Electric calls upon its customers, community leaders, and local representatives to actively discourage electricity theft and ensure timely bill payments. These steps are vital for the continuous and reliable supply of electricity throughout the city. While KE is dedicated to its anti-theft initiatives, it emphasizes that eradicating such illegal activities should be prioritized by the government.
