KARACHI: Amid Karachi's first monsoon spell spanning nearly three days, K-Electric (KE) teams remained actively engaged across the city to ensure power restoration and public safety. The majority of KE's 2,100+ feeders remained stable, though some isolated outages occurred due to illegal connections, lack of adherence to safety protocols, and strain on infrastructure.

Immediate response was provided for these cases, with field teams dispatched despite the ongoing rainfall. Restoration efforts were prioritized at critical water pumping stations, including Dhabeji and the North East Karachi (NEK) old pumping station, which supplies water to limited areas.

While NEK II and III remained operational, a fault at the consumer side of the NEK old pump impacted local supply. KE's teams quickly began restoration work, successfully repairing the fault. At Dhabeji, maintenance teams faced challenges due to waterlogging.

The KE spokesperson extended condolences over reported safety incidents during the monsoon. He clarified that five incidents did not involve KE infrastructure, with two cases involving illegal tampering that created unsafe conditions.

For instance, an incident in Korangi 32-B occurred inside consumer premises during water motor repairs. Incidents in the SITE Area, Surjani Town, and New Karachi 11J were traced to internal wiring faults. In Mangophir, no current leakage from KE's system was found.

In Korangi Sector 9, illegal shifting of a service bracket at a construction site led to an incident, while in Clifton Block 5, an attempted underground cable theft damaged a feeder pillar box, causing an incident. An incident in Lyari is under investigation, with initial findings showing no connection to KE infrastructure.

KE has urged the public to avoid contact with power infrastructure, maintain a safe distance during rains, and report unsafe conditions via 118 or KE's WhatsApp service. Safety messages and precautionary measures have been emphasized on KE's social media platforms.

Strict adherence to safety guidelines and timely coordination between utilities and civic bodies remain essential to minimizing risk and maintaining urban resilience," said Imran Rana, Spokesperson KE.
