Korangi Association of Trade and Industry President Calls for Tax Inclusion of Agricultural Sector in Upcoming Budget

Karachi, Johar Qandhari, President of the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), has urged the inclusion of the agricultural sector in the tax net in the forthcoming budget. He highlighted that while agriculture constitutes 30 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it currently enjoys complete tax exemption. This contrasts sharply with the industrial sector, which contributes only 20 percent to the GDP but bears a significant tax burden.

According to Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, Qandhari pointed out the tax disparity, stating that industrialists face a range of taxes, including duties, regulatory fees, and sales taxes. In contrast, the agricultural sector remains largely untaxed, with landlords and middlemen benefiting from the exemptions, potentially at the economy's expense. Qandhari advocated for more equitable taxation policies, suggesting that while farmers and cultivators should receive tax exemptions and incentives, taxes should be imposed on landlords and middlemen to improve economic stability. He also noted the potential positive impact of such changes on income levels and debt relief for farmers.

Qandhari further emphasized the significant role of the industrial sector in promoting economic growth, creating employment, and supporting foreign exchange through exports. He urged the government to focus on both the agricultural and industrial sectors, recommending that special incentives be offered to the private sector to attract foreign investment and stimulate economic activity.

Qandhari's comments underscore the need for a balanced approach to taxation that supports economic growth while addressing disparities between sectors. By including the agricultural sector in the tax net, the government can potentially create a more equitable system that benefits the broader economy.
