NEPRA Approves K-Electric’s $2 Billion Investment Plan Through 2030

Karachi, The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved K-Electric’s ambitious seven-year investment plan, which outlines significant upgrades to the utility's transmission and distribution systems through FY 2030. This strategic initiative aims to enhance service reliability, expand capacity, and reduce losses, marking a substantial commitment to improving Karachi’s power infrastructure.

According to K-Electric, the plan was rigorously developed in compliance with regulatory guidelines and included a public hearing in March 2023. K-Electric’s CEO, Moonis Alvi, detailed that the investment would focus on growth, energy loss reduction, network rehabilitation, maintenance, and safety, with a strong emphasis on digitization to improve operational transparency and efficiency. The plan also features the installation of advanced metering infrastructure and the integration of cutting-edge technologies like Advanced Distribution Management Systems and Meter Data Management Systems.

The transmission enhancements included in the plan are designed to increase the reliability of K-Electric’s network and facilitate the integration of additional power from the National Grid. Alvi expressed gratitude towards stakeholders for their ongoing support and highlighted the pivotal role of these investments in preparing the utility for future demands.

Additionally, the investment strategy aligns with K-Electric’s Power Acquisition Program, which aims for a 30% share of renewable energy in its generation mix by 2030. The company has also received regulatory nods for RFPs involving 640MW of renewable projects, underscoring its commitment to sustainable and affordable energy solutions.

K-Electric, a vital electricity provider since its privatization in 2005, continues to engage closely with NEPRA to ensure the implementation of its plans within a sustainable and cost-effective tariff structure, essential for the timely realization of these transformative projects.
